Simple spam protection - by shuriken @ 2007-04-24 14:39
I implemented a really simple spam protection system for the guestbook and artist comments, so those should actually be usable now.

At least until one of the spambot operators teaches their bots how to bypass it.

Shuriken's second album released for free download - by shuriken @ 2007-04-20 15:31
I've finished my second album, and it's available for download here. (TSP's album submission system was never finished, which is why I'm posting it here.)

For more information, read the Bubbles post.

Soundspire development log launched - by shuriken @ 2007-04-14 15:17
Today, 1000 days have passed since the original TSP version 1 launched.

To celebrate this special day (really, "1000 days" sounds cooler than the upcoming three year anniversary), soundspire.no-ip.org launches today with a stripped version of the Soundspire software, containing a News section where progress in Soundspire development will be posted from now on. The site also serves as a preview of the new layout.

So even though development is going pretty slowly and we can't at all approximate when to expect a fully functional Soundspire, the project is by no means dead.

To repeat, stay tuned to soundspire.no-ip.org for future updates.

Merry Christmas! - by PS @ 2006-12-23 14:20
TSP wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Last Competition - by PS @ 2006-11-07 19:31
TSP is living its last moments, but it's not too late to start its last competition.

Now at the dark autumn times, we start a small-scale competition called Dark'n'Deep Sounds.

The idea of the competition is make deep and dark-sounding track with mystical atmosphere by using echoes and low-freq sounds. The competition starts now and its end date is not clear yet. So, use your creativity and create a great mystical masterpiece for the glory of autumn.

#soundspire - by shuriken @ 2006-09-14 23:03
As a result of our move from #reasonmusic to the #soundspire channel, the IRC page in the "interact" section was updated too.

Soundspire's IRC channel opened! - by PS @ 2006-09-10 20:10
Soundspire isn't ready yet, but its IRC channel is. Our old channel, #reasonmusic, is now closed. New channel is #soundspire (surprise.. now the name is also software independent).

Join and feel free to talk about composing!

Soundspire Progress Log: Part 1 - Introduction - by shuriken @ 2006-09-04 01:37
As mentioned before, TSP has been more or less abandoned and instead, something totally new is being worked on.

We call it Soundspire. (In case it's not obvious, it's a combination of the words "sound" and "inspire" - a good description of what we want to accomplish)

Soundspire is the result of our experiences through the many versions of TSP. We aim to create a free-of-charge music community with focus on freedom, ease of use and user-friendliness.

Artists will be able to release their music (licensed under a Creative Commons license), receive reviews of their tracks, publish their own artist blog and much more.

Soundspire will have a scoring system that encourages interaction by rewarding various kinds of activity with points, which can be used for things like promoting your profile to make it visible on the front page.

There's no ETA for Soundspire yet, not even rough estimates, since the time I have to work on the project may be fairly limited at times, but here's an overview of the current situation anyway:

The idea of a new music community project was born when we, after numerous discussions and debates, came to the conclusion that TSP didn't really have a future. The reasons for this are many, but the most important one is the inevitable link to the beginning of the shuriken project, when it was nothing but my own personal music site. Throughout the six major iterations of TSP, the site slowly changed to become more like a true music community site, but in many ways it still was the same thing - not least because of its name.

Another reason for the decision to start from the beginning was the code. For me, TSP has served as a code learning platform, and as any programmer knows, code written while learning things for the first time usually doesn't produce solutions that are elegant or future-proof.

To sum it up, TSP served as a nice way to learn and try out both code and ideas for all of us, but now, the time has come to move on. Think of TSP as an experiment and Soundspire as the "real deal".

The code of Soundspire will take full advantage of object-oriented programming, databases and templates to ensure reusability and extensibility. I've entirely rebuilt the fundamental elements of the application several times to counter different problems that would eventually show up, and now, it's finally starting to turn into something that actually makes sense. Soundspire will have a robust and clean codebase that will be convenient to expand to meet our requirements. This is just as important for the future as the implementation of the end-user features.

So where are we now? The low-level stuff is about 70% complete, and the layout is mostly finished. We've gathered a rather long list of ideas, which will continue to expand when I get our admin wiki up and running. Also, now that the problems I had with the low-level code design have been solved, I'll be able to work more on the project.

If we're lucky, we might see early versions appearing before 2007.

Inactivity - by shuriken @ 2006-05-09 18:39
As you can see, there's not a lot going on here at the moment. TSP7 (which, by the way, won't be called TSP anymore -- we need a new name) is not being worked on actively right now either. Don't worry, we haven't given up or anything, there's just not enough ambition or interest to currently work on TSP.

As broken as certain things within the current site are, track submission and all the other "important stuff" still works just fine. Oh, and our visitor counter decided to reset itself, so instead of the 3000-whatever it now shows a few hundred instead.

Anyway, when we eventually do get the new project up, things will start working again and I hope that with the new, more "professional" approach we'll be able to attract more people than before. A music community like this simply doesn't work without people.

Radio down - by PS @ 2006-03-07 17:32
TSP Radio is now permanently down due to technical reasons.

There will be new radio in the future, but not for a while.

Radio up and running - by shuriken @ 2006-01-30 22:43
The radio is now running and works perfectly!

Like before, the address is http://shuri.no-ip.org/radio.m3u.

Radio temporarily down - by shuriken @ 2006-01-30 12:19
We're going to install another radio station app instead of the old one, and the radio station will be down for a day or two.

TSP Radio - by PS @ 2006-01-29 16:40
TSP opened a new internet radio station. Radio is still in test use, but it is online 24/7, if possible.

URL is http://shuri.no-ip.org/radio.m3u

Forums broken - by shuriken @ 2006-01-28 15:49
Due to the previous database updates by our hosting provider, the forums are not working. Other stuff might be working slightly incorrectly too at the moment. But since there's a new version of both TSP and the forums coming, I won't be spending time on trying to fix the old ones -- this might not even be possible.

Still, we apologize for the inconvenience caused, but I want to inform you that most of these problems are nothing we can affect.

Up again - by shuriken @ 2006-01-20 09:09
TSP was experiencing database errors for a week or so, due to upgrades to our MySQL server. The upgrading was successful and TSP is working properly again.

Server down - by shuriken @ 2006-01-02 18:52
TSP was down for a few days while the servers of our hosting provider were upgraded and moved. Although some of their services still are down, TSP should now be fully functional again. Also, after the upgrade, a significant improvement in pageload speed has occurred, which is always a nice thing.

Happy 2006 everybody!

Christmas tracks! - by shuriken @ 2005-12-23 20:18
The Christmas 2005 section is now up.

All participating artists, please follow the instructions on the page above!

Aside from the contest, the new layout is still being worked on. It turns out so much in the structure of pages has to be changed that I decided to take this one step further.

Now, I know there are some people who are disturbed by the constant advancement in version numbers, but what's coming next is so big that I hereby announce the next big change as TSP7.

So what's coming then? Only time will tell.

News system up - by shuriken @ 2005-12-16 01:04
The news system is now fixed and a few minor enhancements have been added.

As Crayfish said, this year's christmas track competition is about to start. If you want to participate, check out and reply to the forum post.

News system problems - by shuriken @ 2005-12-15 10:13
A rather serious bug in the news system has been found and is currently being investigated. If the news page appears strange at times it is only because things are being fixed.

TSP Christmas track competition - by PS @ 2005-12-14 21:20
A new competition is starting. The rules are simple: create your own "Christmas track" in any style you want. The competition is on starting from now and ends in January.

Merry Christmas to everyone!
